Department 1 - Agriculture - Vegetables/Fruits


Rules & Regulations:

  • Please follow the Junior Fair Homecraft Division Rules & Regulations found on pages 5 & 6.
  • All vegetables must be put on appropriately sized disposable plates. Entry tags must be securely fastened prior to dropping off the exhibits.
  • All vegetables must be grown by the exhibitor.
  • For the benefit of the viewing public, varieties should be named if possible.
  • Judging is based on quality, arrangement, freshness, and cleanliness (all root vegetables must be clean but not scrubbed) free of foreign matter and uniformity (where two or more items are required).
  • If you are a New Exhibitor in 2024, please print "New" on the top right corner of your entry tag.

Department 10 – Culinary Arts


Rules & Regulations:

  • Please follow the Adult Fair Homecraft Division Rules & Regulations found on pages 7 & 8.
  • Follow measurements carefully if stated in the description. If entry exceeds maximum measurements, it will be disqualified.
  • All baked items to be presented on a sturdy, disposable plate of appropriate size with entry tags securely attached to the plate prior to dropping off the exhibits, and placed into a clean, clear and appropriately sized Ziploc type bag unless otherwise directed. Additionally, please attach entry tags to the jar not the lids, and please do not use any twist ties to attach entry tags.
  • The baked goods are judged on general appearance, internal appearance, presentation in general, flavour, taste, and aroma.
  • Baking must be done by the exhibitor, but some assistance is accepted.
  • No peanuts or nuts to used in this section, due to allergies.
  • Please remove any paper wrappings around muffins and cupcakes.
  • Cakes will be displayed on a foil cake board (no glass or plastic plates).
  • Jars must have the variety and date the product was made on the front of the jar (no advertising) with the entry tags attached by an elastic band or string at the top of the jar. NO WAX. Jars must be clean and properly sealed.
  • Check for any extra rules if you are entering in the specials.
  • 8 oz = 250 mL, 1 pint = 500 mL.
  • Culinary entries will be displayed during the fair in refrigerated units.
  • If you are a New Exhibitor in 2024, please print "New" on the top right corner of the entry tag.

PLEASE NOTE: As of 2024, all pies and cakes entered in Classes H337 to H341 (except Classes H336 & H342) are to be picked up on Wednesday evening between 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM after judging is completed. A slice of each pie and cake will be displayed during the duration of the fair instead of the whole exhibit.

OAAS Liquid Honey Competition - Pure, Ontario #1, White.

Liquid Honey exhibits shall consist of one (1) clear glass container, having a capacity of 500 grams (375 ml).

Liquid Honey exhibits shall consist of one (1) clear glass container, having a capacity of 500 grams (375 ml). Please review the General Competition Rules document. Exhibitors of honey must be registered beekeepers and the exhibits shown by them must be pure honey from floral sources in their apiaries. Entry must be made solely by the person or family entering the competition. The entries at the fair level, district level and provincial level must be from the same batch. Any honey entry containing any form of foreign material will be disqualified from the competition. An approved colorimeter will be used to assess the colour. Honey will be judged using the standards printed in the OAAS Agriculture & Horticulture Judging Standards for Ontario Fairs. The winning entry will move on to the District 5 competition in the fall.

OAAS Maple Syrup Competition - Pure Maple Syrup, Ontario Grade A - Amber.

Maple syrup exhibits shall consist of one (1) curved Kent style glass bottle (D&G #505188 Syrup Bottle with Handle), or equivalent, of Maple Syrup, Canada Grade A - Amber, having a capacity of 250 mL.

Rules & Regulations:

Please review the General Competition Rules document. Entry must be made solely by the person or family entering the competition. The entries at the fair level, district level and provincial level must be from the same batch. Maple syrup exhibits shall consist of one (1) curved Kent style glass bottle (D&G #505188 Syrup Bottle with Handle), or equivalent, of Maple Syrup, Canada Grade A - Amber, having a capacity of 250 mL. All maple syrup should have a flavour characteristic of its respective colour class and be free from any objectionable odour or taste. It is best to sample from the same lot before submitting your entries to the OAAS. Any maple syrup entry containing any form of foreign material will be disqualified from the competition. An approved maple syrup colorimeter will be used to assess the colour. Maple syrup will be judged using the standards published by the OAAS in Agriculture & Horticulture Judging Standards for Ontario Fairs. The winning entry will move on to the District 5 competition in the fall.

Life Skills Homecraft Division


Department 8 – Life Skills


Rules & Regulations:

  • This Department is for individuals with Physical and/or Intellectual Needs.
  • This Department is Open for Entrants of any age category.
  • All work must be done by the exhibitor. Some assistance in this department is acceptable.
  • Exhibitors may only enter one item in each appropriate class. One exhibitor per entry form. Entry tags must be written out and securely attached to the exhibits before arriving at the grounds. Please pick up your entry tags from the Essa Agriplex Office (Building #7, 7505 10th Line, Thornton) or K.E.C.K. Boarding Kennels (7483 County Road 27, Innisfil) once the entries are completed. The entry tags will be located outside of the Essa Agriplex Office, and inside the K.E.C.K. Boarding Kennels Office.
  • For confidentiality reasons, please write on form only the first name of the person then in care of, and the name of the association. Ex. Marissa, care of Essa & District Agricultural Society.
  • Here is an example of how to fill out an Adult Fair Entry Tag.
  • If you are a New Exhibitor in 2024, please print "New" on the top right corner of the entry tag.
  • There is a $5.00 membership fee for all Life Skills Exhibitors, which will be reimbursed back to the Life Skills Exhibitors once the prize money is given out, all thanks to a generous sponsor. Entry into the Adult or Junior classes will be subject to the rules and fees associated with those divisions.
  • Points are awarded as such: First place 5 points, second place 3 points, and third place 1 point. The person with the highest points will receive a Best of Show ribbon.
  • The Essa & District Agricultural Society is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.
  • No prize will be awarded to an entry that the judge deems unworthy.

Rules & Regulations:

  • Please follow the Junior Fair & Adult Fair Homecraft Divisions Rules & Regulations found on pages 5 & 6 and pages 7 & 8.
  • Scarecrow must be created by the exhibitor.
  • Follow measurements carefully if stated in the description. If entry exceeds maximum measurements, it will be disqualified.
  • Create a free-standing scarecrow that must be at least 4 feet tall.
  • Winning entries will receive a Rosette ribbon.
  • If you are a New Exhibitor in 2024, please print "New" on the top right corner of your entry tag.

Country Fair Scarecrow Competition:
